The THIRD IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR TUBING SAFETY, NEXT TO TIRES AND HOSE. This is because the rim tape effectively protects the inner tube from mechanical damage, e.g. from spoke heads or metal burrs in the rim, and covers the spoke holes.
Note: Valve hole diameters vary by width:
Rim tape widths 18mm and lower have a smaller valve hole intended for use with SV - presta valves.
Rim tape widths greater than 18mm have a larger valve hole
intended for use with AV - schrader valves.
