ULTREMO “R” Replacement Notice

Important information for our customers

WARNING: The SCHWALBE Ultremo “R” tires
that exhibit bulging should be removed from
use immediately. Free of charge replacements
will be supplied.

Regrettably, some ULTREMO “R” racing tires which have been sold into the marketplace might be prone to failure while in use because of an error that has occurred during the manufacturing process. In the limited number of affected tires, the casing layer was not sufficiently rubberized and thus will show a clearly visible bulge, due to the carcass layers separating. This carcass separation will show generally after only a short time in use.

Any Ultremo “R” tires that exhibit this phenomenon should not be used. Replace the tires immediately!

Danger: Not doing so may lead to a catastrophic failure, as the casing layer can chafe and consequently cause the inner tube to burst. If you notice the phenomenon while riding, under no circumstances should you continue to ride the tires at high speeds. It is suggested that the air pressure be reduced to the minimum recommended psi while riding at a low speed and with great care while you “limp home”; then the tire should be replaced.

If you have been affected by the ULTREMO “R” error we apologize for any inconvenience caused.

To receive your free replacement tires please complete the ULTREMO “R” Replacement Form or contact us at ultremo@schwalbetires.com for more details or questions regarding the Ultremo R tires.

On receipt of your submission a new replacement tire will be sent immediately. *

Ultremo R recall

I have to give Schwalbe credit for this recall. I always liked their tires for road (training and racing)as well as the MTB tires. When I saw the recall notice I check my Ultremo R tires and found no evidence of the damage. After I replaced some of the tires with some that I still had in the box the damage was obvious. After entering the online form I had my tires replaced in less then 4 days (sent to my house) and Schwalbe gave me even more tires than were damaged.
Outstanding service! This tells me also that I choose the right tires (beside riding them).

Thanks!

Any news on the new R1s?

Just wondering when the new R1s will be in… It’s well into December now, and still no sign, and I’ve been waiting since August… Customer service has been great tho’, and the interim tyres were cool - I’d just like to know when to expect ‘em.

Replacement R ship date

I submitted a claim back in early August & received my interium replacement tires a week later.

When will the new “R-1” replacement tires be shipped to U.S. customers? I live less than 100 miles from the U.S. Distributer in WA. I thought I would have heard something by now.

Originally I read it was scheduled some time in Sept, then Oct. It’s almost Dec. Any news or update?

I am a convert to Schwalbe

I bought some Ultremo R tires in the bigining of the season along with some Michelin Pro 3’s. I mounted the Pro 3’s and soon found out about the Schwalbe recall. I sent a photo of my unused tires with a request to check if they were in the recall. I didn’t want to find myself in trouble on the road. Well mine were part of the recall. I was shocked at how fast I got a reply and a new set of tires to hold me over till the new R’s show up. The Stelvio’s they sent me are great and I can’t wait to ride the R’s. I still can’t believe the service. High end tires really are a lot alike but service like this is rare and as fare as I am concerned worthy of my loyalty. Thank you for your honesty, your commitment and your diligence. When you see me I will be riding Schwalbe’s.

Greg

Thank you Schwalbe

Thank you Schwalbe, the turn around for the tires in August was extremely fast. Unfortunately I should have posted a note here back in August.

impressed

Though disappointing to experience the bulging problem on two separate occasions have been extraordinarily impressed with how Schwalbe has sought to deal with the problem. Customer service has been truly outstanding. As noted by other users, one would almost never experience this level of commitment to the consumer had an American run company been at the helm. Thank you so much!

Recall Ultremo R

I’m impressed with Schwalbe North America and how they handled the Ultremo R recall. American companies could take a lesson from you on how to conduct a recall and satisfy customers. Sent you my photos, even though the tires were not bulging yet on my racing wheels, and received an immediate response that interim replacement tires were on their way, soon to be followed by the new R1s. It was fast, easy, and hassle free. You’ve made me a customer for life. Outstanding!

3 thumbs up

Yesterday UPS came to collect my Ultremo in Milan Italy that where not showing any sign of bulging. Today I already got the replacemente tires with 2 free innner tubes. Once the new model of Ultremo is out I will also get a pair of those. I am very pleased about the quality of service. What could have turned into a dissapoiting experience with Schwable has turned into a very pleasant one. Great job!

Am I SOL

I’m not in the habit of saving bad tires, I purchased 4 at the beginning of the season and each tire exhibited this problem.

Please advise.

Replacement for tires

I have replaced two tires this season, much to my dismay. I love the Scwalbe tires and their high-end performance and rode last season without difficulty.

Because I had my local bike shop replace the tires, I do not have the damaged tires in my possession to either photograph or retrieve the serial numbers. They were both Ultrem,o R tires. I have another set of Ultremo R’s on my bike right now and they seem to be OK. However, I am concerned about safety as I ride predominantly on hills in New Hampshire. I do have the sales receipt and wondered if it would be acceptable to submit this. One tire completely blew shortly after it was put on the bike and the other tire again blew for apparently no reason (road conditions or debris); that tire had less than 600 miles on it.

Please let me know how to proceed. Thanks very much for your time.

Mileage Producing Bulge

Schwalbe Tire,

For your records regarding the symtoms of bulging, defective Ultremo tires.

I purchased two of the tires at the same time. One bulged at approximately 750 miles. The information on the internet blogs imply that if you have a defective tire it will bulge within the first 100 miles of use. Correcting this rumor would be a safe measure.

I’ve received my replacement tires. Thanks for the replacements.

Replacement Tires - Fast Service

Thank you Schwalbe Tires! I received my replacement tires in less than a week. I’ll I needed to do was complete the form and submit the photos. No questions asked.

Thanks again!

Great tires, amazing service!

I just got my replacements in the mail and I could not be happier with the service.

I was on my second set of Ultremo Rs and think they the best (clincher) tire I have ever ridden.

When I noticed an asymmetrical bulge in the front tire, I replaced it with my “old” Ultremo R. I did not think much about it until I saw the same thing within the next day on the rear. Then, I knew something was unusual.

I expected that I may go to a website, look for a number, or generic email address… try to reach a “real person” and subsequently have a hard time finding anything out about this.

When I landed at schwalbetires.com and saw that there was a replacement notice FIRST THING on the page - I was amazed.

Then, the relatively simple and straightforward process to fill out an online form and send some pics was no problem. I get a message that “replacements are on the way” very quickly. Impressive.

And, by the way, I got quite a bit of use out of my “old” Ultremo Rs - I think they probably still have plenty of miles still in them.

Great tires, amazing service!!!

Brittons Bike Shop

Had mine on from first of May and experienced the defect last night on a ride at speed. almost lost control when the tire seperated and then blew out. Took it to Brittons Bike Shop in San Antonio and they were up on the recall , and replaced both front and back in about 10 mins and had me out the door. Man , that is service. Always recommend them to anyone.

How can we be assured that only certain product codes are involved? I do not want to take a chance that mine might become problematic during a 50 mph decent.

When the Ultremo R tires were found to have a quality defect, the situation was corrected immediately and all inventory since the time of correction has proven to be without issue.

Manufacture Numbers Affected?

I hope you can supply us with the manfacture numbers affected. I have three pairs of the Ultremo R tires and would like to check them all against the affected number codes included in the recall. If I’ve missed seeing them I apologize, just let me know where I can find them.

Ultremo R Production Codes

As the production codes are sometimes illegible or “smudged” and difficult to read, please submit a photo displaying the code. We are trained on how to read all codes accurately. For this reason we will not publish a list of the codes as it will create more confusion than is warranted.

Please submit your photos displaying the codes from the inside of the tires and we will get back to you with an immediate answer to your queries.

This one also got the bulge - I have tried sending an email (along with photographic evidence) to the email address provided - but it did not get through, not sure why. So have resent my original email to both the local distributor and also to the following address - ‘ultremo@schwalbetires.com’ - I would just like to have the 2 tyres I purchased initially replaced. RECALL

As stated in the comment below as well as others posted I also had purchased Ultremo’s and had one rupture on me on a training ride and another showed the same signs a few weeks later. I replaced them with what was immediatly available (as I was in Korea) and had a event coming up and needed tires quickly. I also did not keep the tires as they were “done”. Please advise me on what I can do to take care of the situation.
