More comfort is in demand
The racing tire duo - Stelvio Evolution Pack consisting of Stelvio Front and Rear is available in 25 millimetre width for 2006. Maker Schwalbe is leading the trend towards a more comfortable road racing tires.
More and more racing cyclists are opting for wider tires simply because it is easier to ride on large volume tires, for which reason the Stelvio Evolution Pack for next season is also available in 25 millimetre width.
Additionally the risk of puncturing is lower with wider tires and a Race Guard belt protects effectively against penetration punctures. It consists of two carcass layers embedded into a layer of highly elastic, special India rubber, so with the normal three layers of carcass material there is five layers of protection against punctures.
In 2004 Schwalbe became the first makers to introduce front and rear specific racing tires. In so doing Schwalbe co-ordinated the tires for their particular purpose on front and rear wheels: Stelvio Evolution Front offers maximum road-holding and braking grip, while Stelvio Evolution Rear has low rolling resistance.
Wide tires roll better!
Anyone who thinks that wider tires have higher rolling resistance is wrong. Wider tires roll much better and the wider the tire, the lower the rolling resistance. A broad tire flattens more in its width than its length, so it rolls easier. Explanation: The tire deforms less in its circumference, stays “rounder” and therefore rolls easier.
The Stelvio Evolution Pack with Stelvio Front and Rear in the new 25 millimetre size is available at specialised bicycle dealers from 2006. The tires are also available singly.

Bontrager vs Stelvio
I had a set of Bontrager tires that came with my Trek 1600 new. After a series of flats I had enough. The last flat was on an isolated road next to a very large swamp with very hungry mosquitoes.
I threw down the cash and bought a set of stelvios and have not had a flat with the same set of tires for over 7,000 miles. This is on the same route, which is pretty rough.
At a later point I moved to the UK and rode in the hills/mountains of Yorkshire. There are a series of hills called the Wolds that separate several valleys. The roads often end, and you either turn back or carry the bike for a loooong time. I decided to to ride through the gravel, and later some pretty tough terrain that was littered with rocks around 4-6 cm. I carefully maneuvered around the offending rocks, and would occasionally catch a rear tire on one. This would go on for 2-3 miles and was exhausting. It really challenged your handling skills. I never flatted out or had a puncture through the casing on these tires.
I can’t say enough good things, and I always encourage my local shop to carry Schwalbe tires. I eventually changed the tires out after 10,000 miles(!) with no flats. The only reason I did this was do to an unexpected asphalting of a road.
Thank you Schwalbe for making such a great tire!
Stelvio Ride...
The Stelvios remain a huge favorite for me and are my choice for long distance mountainous rides. The grip, rolling resistance, and cornering abilities are unparalleled from anything I’ve used. Awesome job, Folks! Sehr Gut!
