Durano Plus HS 399

Maximum puncture protection for race machines! The Durano Plus has a SmartGuard
belt for extremely effective protection against penetration punctures. The strong, highly elastic, special rubber layer is not as thick as in the Marathon Plus. Nevertheless it has
a level of protection unparalleled in racing cycle tires.

Durano Plus in 25 or 28 X 559
I currently run the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 42-559 on a wide rim. I am looking for a narrow rim and tire combination with similar puncture resistance to the Supreme. Seems that if the Durano Plus were made in the 25 or 28 X 559 size, that would "fill the bill." Any plans to manufacture this tire in these sizes?
Protection Options
Hello,
I desperately need this Durano Plus HS 399 tire in size 28-559 (26x1.10), or advice toward an alternative tire/tube combination. Some hours of local shop talk and web search have resulted in a growing realization (and frustration) that this tire size has very limited options when it comes to puncture resistance.
I have the Durano HS 399 and have suffered three punctures in one week on the front, with less than 200 miles logged.
One mechanic suggested reaming the rims (Velocity AeroHeat) to accept Schrader valves, increasing the tube options. What do you think of that?
Thank you for your consideration and any advice.

Give Liners a try
Marshall,
Have you tried using a tire liner? I use Mr. Tuffy and I have had good results. They add a mere 25 grams or so to the tire. Some people have complained that liners cause flats because of the seam created when you overlap the liners. I put a small piece of electrical tape on the seam making it very smooth. I am sure other brands of liners work well. I didn't care for the Slime Liners as I found them to be too bulky, but your mileage my vary.
While not 100% flat-proof, I have pulled thorns and glass out of my tires and the Mr. Tuffy liners work well for me. For $15 they are worth a try.
Flats & Liners
Bentrider1957,
Thanks for the feedback. The rims do have liners though I don't know what kind; the rig came that way. Next time I remove the tires I'll look closer. I recall that they may be blue and are paired and overlapping. I've had another flat since posting here and may be seeing a pattern but that remains under investigation.
I'm still thinking of replacing the tires themselves for heavier duty, and/or reaming the rims to accomodate Schrader valves. My rig is for commuting two or three days a week and I need to minimize or eliminate this issue.

451 option is a must
Please consider producing this in a 451. At this point in time there are no puncture resistant options for my trike offered by Schwalbe. In order to get anything with puncture resistance I'm forced to purchase a competing product.
Seeing as the new Catrike Speed is using the 451 for its rear tire, maybe it's time to consider producing more models in that size.
I don't want to have to buy something other than Schwalbe, but I also don't like to change my rear tire any more than I absolutely have to.
67 epi
Both the Durano and the Durano plus have an EPI of 67. Why is the sidewall protection rating for the Plus version higher?
Anybody? Schwalbe support?
Anybody? Schwalbe support?
700x28 please!
I love my 700x28 Duranos, but adding a layer of Smartguard would make them the perfect tire for me.
Riding 70% Road/ 30% Gravel with fast riders....10k per year
Looking for the best tire for both worlds. Thinking the Durano Plus is the one to get. Most miles will be on pristine roads but if we see nice gravel roads and/or dirt we might ride through. Don't want to fuss around. Just want 1 tire to keep up with roadies and go off in gravel with minimal flats.
Thanks
Great tyre!
I have been running the Stelvio Plus (now Durano Plus) for about two years. Never had a single puncture! And I have been riding even in sand and gravel roads. There is a small weight penalty compared to ~200g racing tyres, but in my opinion these are still pretty fast rolling.
tubes
what kind of tube, if any, do i need to use with this tire?
How thick is the SmartGuard Layer?
In the Marathon Plus it's 5mm of SmartGuard. Add the tread and casing and it's about 1 cm between the road and the inner tube.
What are the specs on this tire? And, are these the same as the Stelvio Plus?
Thanks.
How thick is the SmartGuard Layer?
Anyone?
SmartGuard Layer
The Durano Plus is very similar to the Stelvio Plus, the only main differences are the name and the slightly different tread pattern, the puncture protection is the same using the SmartGuard. The SmartGuard in the Durano Plus is a little thinner than the Marathon Plus and would be about 3mm thick. When combined with the tread and casing it would have a total thickness of about 6-7mm.
Schwalbe Support
Thanks!
Thanks for that. Another question-- any chance that the Durano Plus will come in the larger sizes that the Durano comes in?
.. and the smaller sizes?
I would love Durano Plus in the 406 and 451 sizes (I'm a Bike Friday rider). I realize the Stelvio Plus never got that small, but I always wished it would. I've always loved the Stelvios except for the flats!
406 is a MUST!!!
I know for a fact that a Durano Plus in the 406 would be the best selling 406.
All you have to do is offer it!!!
Yes, Please!
There doesn't seem to be a Smart Guard solution for us 451 riders. I'd certainly be buying them!
406 for the Folding Tourists!
There aren't many options for a 406 road tire with excellent puncture resistance. I used Marathon Supremes on my BF Pocket Llama for my camping tour from Oostende (BE) to Augsburg (DE). Bravo Schwalbe, they never flatted once, but I wished I could have rolled a little faster. 42mm is too wide for a road tire, but I did appreciate the extra traction when tackling some logging roads and unpaved paths in the Schwäbisch Alps. As an occasional off-road, all-rounder touring tire, the Supremes truely shine.
My next tour will be strictly on good road, so minimizing rolling resistance is a must. So far it looks like the Marathon Plus, but the weight is a turn-off.
I could see a light, but highly puncture-resistant 28 or 32x406 slick having wide appeal for all folding riders. I'd be happy whether it's a narrow Marathon Supreme or a Durano Plus!
Another vote for 406
I would also love the Durano Plus in 406 size.
Currently using the Marathon Plus, and I don't want to give up its protection, but I would love to shed some weight...
406 for me, too!
On city streets there's plenty of little glass and metal shards for my poor tires to pick up, and I've certainly had my share! I'd happily pay a premium for more puncture-resistant tires if it means I don't have to fix a flat on a dark, cold, rainy morning...
