Marathon XR HS 359

The ultimate expedition tire! An extremely versatile tread with a incomparably friction resistant rubber compound.

The High Density Guard protection belt offers excellent puncture protection at an extremely low weight. A special chafer around the bead prevents the tire scrubbing out on the rim under extreme loads. Made as a folding tire to pack easily in luggage.

XR

Why on earth are you eliminating probably the best all round tire you make ?
I have tried 3 of your top brand touring trecking tires and still find this the best.
It seems you guys come up with a new tire just about every year, and it's getting to confusing to pick a tire .
Simplify and improve the tires that are proven.

Diminishing XR availability

I have been using the XR with puncture resistant tubes on both my touring bike and my commuter for the past 6 years. I have logged thousands of miles over the worst terrain and never had a flat. The XR is durable and maintenance free. I only use Schwalbe tires as a result of my experience with the XR and no tire wears as well as it. What I do not understand is why Schwalbe seems to be eliminating the XR. Fewer and fewer sizing options are available. This is the best tire I have ever used, why is it going away???

With this particular model

With this particular model the only difference in the construction is the bead type. They should be equal in on-bike performance. Using the exceptions of the original questions I would buy the wire bead version because of price.

A 26" in a 32mm, 35mm or 37mm

All 26"'s don't have to be giant.

Surly is making all their LHT's w. 26" wheel options. I'm sure a narrower 26" touring tire would be a great seller for you. Thanks.

With touring tires, the

With touring tires, the chief objective behind the Kevlar bead is to put together the tire foldable so it can be undoubtedly packed in panniers. The sidewall construction of a Schwalbe long-drawn-out XR with wire bead or Kevlar bead is identical, as is the remnants of the tire.

Disappointed!

Just fitted a new wheel to the rear of my tourer equipped with new Marathon XR.
First ride punctured with flint chipping
Second ride punctured with another flint chipping!
Is this just bad luck??

Would like to see this excellent tyre in 20"

I already use this tires on my Surly LHT... And I realldy love them !
I would by them for my recumbent and trike if they exist in 20" !
I really miss them !!!

Marathon XR in 20", YES !!!

I have used XRs on my touring bike for years. Now that I ride a recumbent trike, I really miss them ! The only alternative in 20" is the Marathon Plus which is not as stiff and durable.

Is stated 'Tire Load Limit' per tire or for 2 tires?

Hello Schwalbe,

Can you clarify the stated tire load limit? For example, the Marathon XR in size 622-37 has a load limit of 115Kg. Is this per tire or for a pair of Marathon XR tires? Thank you.

will this fit these rims?

Will the 11652469 50-622 700 x 50C fit a rim that is 47mm wide x 608.5mm Effective Rim Diameter ?

This just in............

marathon XR

For 2 week touring trips, usually 90% asphalt, 10% dirt/gravel road and occasional forest tracks etc, would you recommend the 1.6 or 2 width? I will be using rear panniers with 12-15kg load and I weigh 78kg (172lb).

HD Ceramic Guard

I just got my Marathon XRs, and they actually have HD Ceramic Guard, not just HD Guard.

Rim size for XR 50-559

Although it is not recommended on the Schwalbe sizing chart, is there a problem using a Marathon XR 50-559 on a 29C width rim?

out of stock

Hi,
When will the 26x2.25" be in stock? Thanks!

limited size range, out of stock?

The XR has the best combination of properties now possible for a bike tire, so why such a limited size range, and why are the common sizes perpetually sold out? This is your finest product, so please make more of them, and please broaden the sizes to include some 406's for recumbent touring.

Marathon XRs for 29ers?

This tire gets amazing reviews from great divide mountain bike route thru-cyclists and other long-distance mountain tour riders. Most people are now running 29ers for this type of riding. How about making them for 29ers? I'd buy em.

"Most" people running 29er for this type of riding

Since the market for "29er" is still only about 1% of the total bike volume sold in the US and the fact that most shops stock only a small amount of of "29er" tubes, tyres and the like. I would hesitate to say that "most" people are using 29ers for long distance touring. the simple fact is most people are still using "26in" for off road touring, because it is lighter, stops faster, and is easier to push up hills. Not to mention that 97% of all shops around the world have rims, tyres and tubes for a 26in rims, do yourself a favor Jump off the band wagon and go your own route through life. in fact a great deal of touring cyclist still use 700c and Canti or V brakes, why who knows it is just the way it is.

Marathon XRs for 29ers

"29er" is just another marketing phrase. All "29er" bikes use a standard 622 mm rim. This means that any 622, commonly also referred to as 700C, tire will fit.

For 29er bikes we can recommend Marathon XR, 50-622 (700 x 50C), which translates to 29 x 2.00.

2.00 or 2.25?

hi would it be better to have the 2.25 for touring?or i'll put 2.25 rear and 2.00 in front?

Tire Replacement

If tread height is use to replace these tires, what is that height,or is there another method used to determine replacement?

I have two 26" * 2" nearly new folding XRs for sale... $90

I ended up going with a recumbent for my tour. Now I have 20" Marathon tires and need to find a new home for these XRs. They have less than 3 weeks on them... pristine. Take them both for $90. Cliff 415-632-6200.

Marathon XR suitability for a cross tandem?

I'm considering the Marathon XR in the 700x40c size for our mid 90's Trek Double Cross tandem. Current tire is 700x35c Matrix Invert K, which has insufficient tread to be suitable for dirt bike path use. Stoker and I weigh in at about 350# total, use will be more than half paved street, but would rather sacrifice some rolling resistance for a more stable bike on the local pathways. My local bike shop showed me a Marathon XR tire sample set from Schwalbe with a tag that showed this tire available in 42-622 and 47-622. Are these the same as the current listings of 40 and 50 sections? Any reason to prefer wire vs. kevlar beads on a tandem? Thanks,
Dan Wilson, Colorado Springs, CO

In Smaller Sizes?

I am greatly cursed by goathead thorns. Marathon XR's look like they can give these satanic apparitions some real resistance. The problem is that I use 20" x 1.75". Any chance that this size is going to become available in Marathon XR?

Love the XRs, but....

....we need them to be in stock to buy them. I need some 26 x 2.0" folding XRs and I've been checking for a loooooooong time without ever seeing them in stock.

Any idea when they'll be available again?

I called Schwalbe today concerning the very same tires and was told April 10! Perfect timing after this long winter.

folding bead vs wire bead

What criteria should be used in choosing between these two types if portablity and weight are not issues? Are they equal in all other respects (ie durability)?

folding bead vs wire bead

From Schwalbe Tech Info

The bead core of the tire determines its diameter and ensures a secure fit on the rim. Generally the bead core of a tire is made of steel wire.

In folding tires, the steel wire is replaced with a hoop of Kevlar fiber. The advantage is that the tire can be folded and that, depending on the size, its weight can be reduced by 50 to 90 g.

folding bead vs. wire bead

My own experience touring off road with a BOB trailer is that sidewalls don't seem to hold up as well with a folding bead. Perhaps the sidewalls are made thinner on the folding bead tires? Please note that I have not yet tried the Schwalbes (which is why I am looking at the site).

Tire sidewall

Folding bead tires are generally associated with racing tires. Racers need their tires to be as light as possible – hence the folding bead, made from light weight Kevlar fibers, and a light sidewall construction.

With touring tires, the main objective behind the Kevlar bead is to make the tire foldable so it can be easily packed in panniers. The sidewall construction of a Schwalbe Marathon XR with wire bead or Kevlar bead is identical, as is the rest of the tire.

Team Schwalbe

Could "Team Schwalbe" please answer the original question?

I am interested in the reply to the original question (which was not mine, but must be the first question any potential purchaser asks):

"What criteria should be used in choosing between these two types if portability and weight are not issues? Are they equal in all other respects (i.e. durability)?"

perhaps I could put it slightly differently:

" Which tire would the Team Schwalbe members take with them on a several month long trip if portability and weight were not issues for them? "

By the way these Schwalbe tires are great see: http://candmwanderings.blogspot.com/2007/10/notes-on-tires.html
I just need to understand which ones to buy for my second bike!

Not a Schwalbe tech but I know tires

With this particular model the only difference in the construction is the bead type. They should be equal in on-bike performance. Using the exceptions of the original questions I would buy the wire bead version because of price.

Thank you

Thank you for your helpful and precise comment. It made the relative advantages of the features of the tires clear. Because in truth, because I am going on a year long trip, I care more about weight than money I have ordered the Kevlar version.

Indestructible tires

Just as an aside, I have toured extensively throughout N. Am. - these are the definitive tire for your worst cycling nightmare. The high durometer rubber in the center reduces rolling resistance on road, while the softer durometer sides give excellent grip off-road. Puncture resistance is unparalleled. These are the ultimate expedition tire. Not the fastest rolling tires, but the most reliable and dependable bar none. If your extreme sport calls for middle-of-nowhere-go-anywhere tires, look no further.
